Find what sets you apart, build a brand story that connects, then turn it into growth, tested with real audiences, not assumed from a boardroom.
Small businesses rarely lose because the work isn't good. They lose because the brand doesn't make the case: the advantage is real but unstated, the selling points are ones any competitor could also claim, and the audience never quite understands why this one instead of the other three.
This engagement works on both halves: identifying the competitive advantage that's actually defensible, and building the story and presence that communicate it. Then we test it with real people before it goes anywhere near a launch.
And it doesn't stop at the brand. A strong identity that nobody encounters isn't worth much, so the work carries through into growth: the marketing approach that fits your budget, and the promotional events that put the brand in front of the right rooms.
I've done this from both sides. Corporate strategy and business development at PwC, Burberry and Esprit, an MBA from London Business School, and then building two businesses of my own: a fashion brand and a marketing strategy agency. I know what these decisions look like on a small business budget, because I've had to make them on one.
What you do that others genuinely can't, said plainly. We pressure-test every claim against what competitors could say too, and keep only what survives, then sharpen it into a selling point specific enough to build a business on. Part of that is your point of view: what you actually believe about your industry, and how it should be done differently. A real POV is the one advantage nobody can copy, and most businesses never put theirs into words.
The narrative that connects and engages the people you're trying to reach. Not just what you sell, but why it exists and who it's for, expressed in language your audience recognises as speaking to them.
How the story looks. Colour, typography, imagery, and the overall visual register, drawn from what the brand stands for rather than chosen because it's current. It ends in a brand toolkit: logo files, palette, type, templates and simple usage guidelines in one place, so anyone who touches the brand (you, a designer, a printer, whoever you hire next) applies it the same way without having to ask.
Testing the story with real people before you commit to it. We find out how the brand lands: what's clear, what's confusing, what's memorable. Decisions are then grounded in evidence rather than instinct alone.
Turning the brand into a consistent presence across the channels that matter for your business. Voice, visual direction, and a rhythm you can actually sustain alongside running the company.
Growth through the right associations. Identifying partners whose audiences overlap with yours, and building genuine community engagement rather than one-directional broadcasting.
Turning the brand into actual growth. Building the marketing approach that fits your business and budget, and running promotional events (launches, pop-ups, activations) that put you in front of the right people and give the brand somewhere to live beyond a screen.
